Tepezza Lawsuit for Hearing Loss & Tinnitus
The adverse effects of harmful drugs can be devastating. Some medications can cause serious health problems like heart attacks, strokes, and seizures.
Some patients do not experience any problems when taking a particular drug. However, other patients may have severe side effects leading to hospitalization or death.
Drug manufacturers must list the possible adverse effects of a drug in the product's labeling, but only some are listed on the label. Patients may not know the risks associated with a particular drug until they experience a problem.

What Is Tepezza?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Tepezza on January 21, 2021, to treat a dull-related active thyroid eye disease (TED), a debilitating, rare autoimmune disease called Graves' eye disease.
Common TED symptoms include eye bulging, eye pain, vision loss, difficulty closing eyes, and light sensitivity.
The Administration approved the drug after years of clinical trials evaluating the generic form (teprotumumab) and publishing the results in the New England Journal of Medicine. During the clinical trials, participants received IV (intravenous) infusions between one time every three weeks. The trial needed for FDA approval lasted for six months.
Currently, each vial of the drug costs approximately $15,000, generating more than $800 million in a single year for the pharmaceutical company. After two clinical trials, many patients developed severe side effects, especially those previously diagnosed with pre-diabetes and diabetes before beginning their prescription.
What Is Thyroid Eye Disease?
Thyroid eye disease (TED) is a condition that affects the thyroid gland and the eyes. The most common symptoms of TED include:
- Bulging eyes
- Redness in the white of the eye
- Pressure or pain behind the eye
- Difficulty reading signs
- One eye moving slower than the other
- Swollen eyes
- Eyelid swelling
- A gritty, dry eye sensation
- Watery eyes
- Light sensitivity
- Blurry or double vision
- Color vision loss
- Vision loss
While there is no cure for TED, there are treatments that can help reduce the symptoms. One such treatment is Tepezza, which reduces eye bulging and double vision.
While Tepezza can effectively treat TED, it can also cause some side effects, including headaches, dizziness, and nausea. In some cases, Tepezza can also cause blurred vision and dry eyes.
While these side effects can be bothersome, they are usually temporary and go away after a few weeks. Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing any of these side effects.
How Does Tepezza Help?
Tepezza and the generic teprotumumab-trbw treat thyroid eye disease (TED) or Graves' eye disease. TED causes swelling in the tissues surrounding the eyes, causing pain, blurry vision, and sometimes even loss of sight. Tepezza helps reduce swelling and improve vision.
Graves disease is an autoimmunity disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly identifies healthy cells in the eye as foreign invaders. When it does this, it causes inflammation and swelling in the area around the eyes. Over time, this damage can lead to scarring and permanent vision loss.
The most common symptom of thyroid eye disease is swollen eyelids, often accompanied by eye irritation, burning, itching, or a feeling of pressure behind the eyes.
While many people experience no symptoms at all after taking the drug used to treat Thyroid Eye Disease, others develop symptoms that may include:
- Double and blurry vision
- Drooping eyelids
- Excessive tearing
- Light sensitivity
- Difficulty focusing
What Pharmaceutical Company Manufactures Tepezza?
Horizon Pharmaceuticals manufactures Tepezza (teprotumumab-trbw). Horizon Therapeutics distributes the drug that works at the source of the disease by helping the body produce enough thyroid hormone, alleviating many Thyroid Eye Disease symptoms by producing an atomic change in affected tissue.
The pharmaceutical company states that the medication decreases proptosis, improves diplopia, and improves functional vision within 24 weeks of taking the drug.
Taking Tepezza to Treat Thyroid Eye Disease: Permanent Hearing Loss and Other Side Effects
By March 2021, numerous studies identified concerns with Tepezza used to treat thyroid eye disease. The Endocrine Society revealed that 20 of the 26 patients in their study were diagnosed with an auditory impairment that had not been previously identified as a safety issue.
In the Horizon Therapeutics data, only 10% of the Tepezza users involved in their study developed hearing loss problems compared to the 77% of the patients involved in the Endocrine Society study who had experienced Tepezza hearing loss.
One report indicated that Horizon pharmaceuticals took action to ignore relevant safety concerns about it Tepezza infusions and likely intentionally conspired to hide the lack of efficacy in taking the medication.
Tepezza Hearing Loss Injuries
Many men and women who have already been diagnosed with vision problems have developed severe side effects after taking the drug, including permanent loss of hearing.
Medical science determined that there are serious hearing-related side effects from taking the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved Grave's disease drug, including:
- Permanent hearing damage, including mild hearing loss or tinnitus (constant ringing in the ears)
- Bilateral hearing loss
- Severe hearing impairment
- Sensorineural hearing loss due to damage to the inner ear
- Long-term hearing problems
- Permanent hearing loss
- Hyperacusis (a hearing disorder involving loudness perception)
- Hearing distortion (variable hearing loss)
- Autophony hearing problems involving enhanced perception or echoing sounds caused by the patient's own voice
- Eustachian tube dysfunction
The First Product Liability Lawsuit Involving Tepezza
Tepezza lawsuit lawyers filed a civil action against the drug maker, claiming that Horizon pharmaceuticals Inc failed to take action and alert regulators of the serious concerns of Tepezza hearing loss and other auditory problems, excluding hearing-related side effects.
The Tepezza hearing loss lawsuit involved an Arizona man who suffered permanent hearing loss and tinnitus (ear ringing). The plaintiff's doctor prescribed the medication administered through Tepezza infusions every three weeks between June 2020 and September 2020.
The plaintiff alleges that the pharmaceutical company failed to notify him or his doctors of the known serious health risks associated with taking Tepezza, including hearing loss and ringing in the ears.
The medication's negative hearing side effects will likely lead to many more Tepezza lawsuits in the months and years ahead, involving plaintiffs seeking financial compensation for damages.
