The Bair Hugger blanket is a medical device manufactured by 3M and Arizant. Healthcare professionals use it to warm patients during various procedures; thus, it closely resembles an actual bear bug. It was invented in 1988 by Dr. Scott Augustine. There are over tens of thousands of Bair Hugger blankets in circulation in America today and they have been used on hundreds of millions of patients according to its producers.
Why use it?
Many patients that present to physicians are unable to warm themselves. They might enter with hypothermia and, thus, need assistance regaining a proper, warm temperature. On the other hand, many patients are anesthetized during surgery and, consequently, lose their ability to maintain a warm temperature throughout their body. To raise or maintain a patient's core body temperature, healthcare providers very regularly use a Bair Hugger. In addition to warming the body, they are supposed to prevent wound infections, reduce hospital stays, and even stave off death.
What Does it do
Billing itself as a "forced-air" device, the Bair Hugger brings heat to the body to help raise blood flow. In turn, this is supposed to assist in the healing process because it brings nutrients and warmth to the affected areas of the body (and those recently operated on). Additionally, it eliminates harmful cells and toxins that can have deleterious consequences on the patient's health and recovery.
How is it Constructed?
Resembling a traditional blanket, the Bair Hugger is a disposable blanket with modules that inject warm air through a heating unit. They have multiple temperature settings that are designed to deliver a consistent stream of air across the patient. Additionally, they are constructed to ensure flexibility so that they can be arranged around a patient in many ways.
