Virginia Clergy Sexual Abuse Attorneys

Virginia Attorneys Investigating Sexual Assault Claims Against the Roman Catholic Church Diocese

Religious leaders, including priests, bishops, cardinals, and pastors, provide spiritual guidance through a trust or a bond with parishioners. Unfortunately, church officials often turn a blind eye when the predatory priest commits crimes of sexual abuse with innocent victims and goes unpunished.

For decades, the church has simply relocated the sexual predator and never discussed concerns with the congregation at the priest’s old or new church. Recently, many victims of sexual assault have come forward to ensure that their sexual assaulter is held financially and legally accountable after finding out they have legal options to pursue a case.

It takes great courage for the sexually molested victim to speak out and identify the one that caused them harm. The compassionate network of affiliate attorneys at Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers, LLC, can help you or a loved one with legal assistance involving surviving sexual assault. Our caring team of legal representatives will fight on your behalf to protect your rights and provide a safe place to talk about what happened.

A clergy abuse attorney will listen to your story confidentially and take legal action. We will use our comprehensive understanding of Virginia tort law to present and win your case to ensure the sexual perpetrator faces financial consequences.

Sexual Assault with Clergy Remains a Problem

In February 2019, the Roman Catholic Church in Virginia released a report identifying over fifty religious leaders who were credibly accused of sexually assaulting underage minors from the 1950s to the 1990s. The Arlington Diocese report listed sixteen religious leaders, including one reverend accused of sexual assault in 2007.

The Diocese first became aware of an allegation of child sex assault in the 1950s when the accusation was substantiated and found credible. Even so, the church took no appropriate action to notify law enforcement, the community, or parishioners of the dangerous predatory priest among them.

The Roman Catholic Church of Virginia removed both Father John Blankenship and Reverend John Leonard from their ministry after they were convicted of sexual assault. Others, including Father Paul Murphy and Reverend Frederick Beardsley, were suspended from their duties after both priests were found to have sexually abused innocent victims.

The Devastating Effects of Sexual Assault

Many sexual assault survivors find dangerous solutions through self-medicating with drugs or alcohol to cope with what happened. Others engage in risky sexual activity that could place themselves or others at harm. Years after the abuse, the victim may behave in ways that jeopardize their work environment, the ability to maintain a household, or gain an education.

Families and friends often find it challenging to understand what is going on because the victim cannot speak out to say what happened years or decades earlier.

The sense of helplessness is often overpowering and leads to a loss of control in day-to-day activities. Usually, when the Church becomes aware of the sexual predator’s inappropriate behavior, the crime is never reported to law enforcement, or the victim is not believed. In some cases, the survivor will cause self-injury as a coping mechanism or take their life when the hope of moving forward without emotional pain or despair seems gone.

Get Justice Now

In February 2020, the Diocese of Richmond created an Independent Reconciliation Program to settle claims where victims allege sexual assault by Roman Catholic religious leaders. Church officials are now offering sexual abuse survivors a monetary compensation in exchange for giving up the right to file a lawsuit against the church.

The program follows the response that the Pennsylvania Roman Catholic Church took after their grand jury report identified more than a thousand underage victims in that state who were sexually assaulted by over 300 clergy members.

Sexual assault survivors must be found eligible for participation in the reconciliation program to receive compensation based on numerous factors. Some factors include the victim’s age when the sexual molestation occurred, the extent of the inappropriate action by the religious leader, the number of times the abuser assaulted the victim, and how the victim was affected after the assault.

Eligibility will also be determined on any assistance that the Diocese provided over the years.

Jonathan Rosenfeld was professionally objective, timely, and knowledgeable. Also, his advice was extremely effective regarding my case. In addition, Jonathan was understanding and patient pertaining to any of my questions or concerns. I was very happy with the end result and I highly recommend Jonathan Rosenfeld. Michonne Proulx
★★★★★
Extremely impressed with this law firm. They took control of a bad motorcycle crash that left my uncle seriously injured. Without any guarantee of a financial recovery, they went out and hired accident investigators and engineers to help prove how the accident happened. I am grateful that they worked on a contingency fee basis as there was no way we could have paid for these services on our own. Ethan Armstrong
★★★★★
This lawyer really helped me get compensation for my motorcycle accident case. I know there is no way that I could have gotten anywhere near the amount that Mr. Rosenfeld was able to get to settle my case. Thank you. Daniel Kaim
★★★★★

★★★★★
Jonathan did a great job helping my family navigate through a lengthy lawsuit involving my grandmother's death in a nursing home. Through every step of the case, Jonathan kept my family informed of the progression of the case. Although our case eventually settled at a mediation, I really was impressed at how well prepared Jonathan was to take the case to trial. Lisa
