Initially, the area that became Vermilion County was a part of new grants between 1682 and 1763. At that point, Great Britain acquired the territorial landmass after the French and Indian War. Within years, the United States of America acquired the colonial land after winning the Revolutionary War. It was later a part of the Indiana Territory that became the Illinois Territory before finally being established as a part of the State of Illinois.

Many of the early settlers were attracted to the area because of the saline springs and fertile soil. Danville, the county seat, enticed Abraham Lincoln to practice law from 1841 to 1859 in the area. Lincoln gave one of his rousing campaign speeches in 1858 at Danville.

The most recent US Census indicates that there are more than 32,600 households in Vermilion County made up primarily of Whites, African-Americans, Asians, and Native Americans. Ancestral heritage of the county includes immigrants from Germany, Ireland, England, and America. A bit more than nine percent of the population in the county is 65 years and older.
