Tennessee Clergy Sexual Abuse Attorneys

Tennessee Attorneys Investigating Sexual Assault Claims Against the Roman Catholic Church Dioceses

While the religious faithful often looks at church leaders and clergy members with admiration and reverence, the Roman Catholic church’s cover-up concerning sexual abusers has finally revealed the unimaginable truth. Thousands of predatory priests have committed unspeakable acts and victimized young adults, teenagers, and children through sexual assault, molestation, rape, fondling, and inappropriate touching.

Many incidents of sexual assault involving clergymen happened when the religious leader was in charge of supervising younger children at Mass, school, camp, or other church-related events. Some of the priests ‘groomed’ their victims for years to be abused.

It often takes decades for a sexual abuse victim to speak out and identify their assaulter years after they were intimidated or threatened into silence. If you are a sexual assault survivor and want justice, a clergy abuse attorney with the compassionate network of affiliate attorneys at Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers, LLC, can help.

Our caring team of legal experts will fight to protect your rights and provide a safe place to speak confidentially about what occurred. Clergy Sexual Assault – An Ongoing Problem

In November 2018, the Roman Catholic Nashville Diocese identified thirteen religious leaders accused of sexually assaulting underage minors between the 1940s and 1990s. Many of these former priests were assigned to Catholic churches, parochial schools, and youth programs throughout Tennessee.

Some critics are upset that the diocese is self-investigating itself to uncover previously hidden cases involving abuse committed by priests and other church employees.

In 2019, a female victim came forward with an allegation that Reverend James Rudisill had sexually assaulted her six decades ago when she was twelve. She could not tell her mother, who urged her to walk to the parish church a few blocks away, what happened.

The woman said that the priest took her to the gym and molested her in a closet on the stage. Although the victim reported the incident nearly forty years later, it took the Roman Catholic Nashville Diocese more than a quarter of a century to tell the public and parishioners what happened.

The Devastating Effects of Sexual Assault

Many clergy sexual abuse victims experience survivor’s guilt and self-blame. Some genuinely believe that they did something wrong that led the religious leader to misbehave instead of knowing that the predatory priest used his position of power to take advantage of the victim.

The reverend might have intimidated the victim into remaining silent for fear of retribution or exposure. The traumatic reaction the sexual assault victim experiences can last a lifetime if he or she does not receive effective survivor counseling.

Some short-term effects associated with clergy sexual molestation include denial, guilt, a lack of trust, a sense of isolation, amnesia, dissociation, cognitive problems (blocking out thoughts) and psychological issues including depression, flashbacks, and nightmares. Long-term effects often involve continuing anxiety, mood swings, phobias, paranoia, withdrawal, long-term relationship difficulties, sexual dysfunction, and localized pain.

Seeking Victim Justice

In January 2020, the Roman Catholic Knoxville Diocese announced it had agreed to an out-of-court lawsuit settlement resolving a case involving a victim who alleged two diocesan priests sexually abused him when he was a child. The Church agreed to the settlement by admitting no wrongdoing. The lawsuit documents filed in the Knox County Circuit Court revealed that the two priests involved in the sexual molestation died during the 1990s. Both priests work for the Roman Catholic Church in Tennessee.

During the same month, members of SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) requested that Church officials, including the Vatican, investigate the Knoxville Diocese. The survivors’ organization alleges that the Roman Catholic Church had silenced victims of sexual molestation committed by religious leaders. The Vatican had outlawed the practice of covering up cases nearly two decades ago.

Client Reviews
Jonathan Rosenfeld was professionally objective, timely, and knowledgeable. Also, his advice was extremely effective regarding my case. In addition, Jonathan was understanding and patient pertaining to any of my questions or concerns. I was very happy with the end result and I highly recommend Jonathan Rosenfeld. Michonne Proulx
Extremely impressed with this law firm. They took control of a bad motorcycle crash that left my uncle seriously injured. Without any guarantee of a financial recovery, they went out and hired accident investigators and engineers to help prove how the accident happened. I am grateful that they worked on a contingency fee basis as there was no way we could have paid for these services on our own. Ethan Armstrong
This lawyer really helped me get compensation for my motorcycle accident case. I know there is no way that I could have gotten anywhere near the amount that Mr. Rosenfeld was able to get to settle my case. Thank you. Daniel Kaim
Jonathan helped my family heal and get compensation after our child was suffered a life threatening injury at daycare. He was sympathetic and in constant contact with us letting us know all he knew every step of the way. We were so blessed to find Jonathan! Giulia
Jonathan did a great job helping my family navigate through a lengthy lawsuit involving my grandmother's death in a nursing home. Through every step of the case, Jonathan kept my family informed of the progression of the case. Although our case eventually settled at a mediation, I really was impressed at how well prepared Jonathan was to take the case to trial. Lisa
