Swift Transportation is a large trucking company that logs over 1.8 billion miles per year and employs 21,000 drivers across the United States. Swift transports almost every form of cargo available, including hazardous liquids, gases, and chemicals. Its safety record is questionable at best, and Swift Transportation vehicles have been involved in an alarming number of trucking accidents over the last five years. The number of crashes and the severity of injuries which have resulted in demands that Swift Transportation changes its policies and begin to place a higher value on the safety of all those who must share the highways with its drivers. Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers LLC recognizes the dangers these vehicles pose to others on the roads. Our office regularly represents individuals and families injured in Swift Transportation truck accidents.
Swift Transportation Incident Rate is Alarming
Studies in 2012 and 2015 that record and evaluate the same data over two-year spans have revealed concerns about Swift’s trends in safety and involvement in accidents that result in severe injuries and fatalities. Numerous factors influence accidents and the data evaluated in these studies may allow us to pinpoint critical areas where Swift Transportation can improve more accurately.
- The 2012 study recorded 1,500 accidents involving Swift trucks and 435 resulted in injuries— including 38 fatalities. The 2015 study recorded 1,934 crashes, 550 injuries, and 52 deaths. Swift’s accident rate increased by about 29% and the number of fatalities rose by almost 37%. This horrific record is unacceptable on both accounts and could be a symptom of poor policies, violation of safety protocol and the lack of safety training and education programs.
- The 2012 data shows that out of 17,364 vehicle inspections, 2,580 out of service violations were reported. The 2015 study revealed similar statistics— 18,969 inspections which resulted in 2,795 violation. The violation rate in each study was nearly identical and suggests that Swift Transportation has made no significant effort to improve its maintenance standards.
- Swift Transportation drivers boast a low out of service rate based on data from both studies. In 2012, 609 violations resulted from 33,361 inspections, which is a violation rate of only 1.8%. 2015 figures paint the same picture and even boast a small improvement. 34,890 inspections resulted in 469 violations, which is a rate of just 1.4% and about one-fifth of the industry average of 5.51%.
- The injury rate of trucking accidents involving Swift Transportation vehicles is the greatest concern. Of 1500 accidents reported in the 2012 study, 435 resulted in injuries requiring hospitalization. Roughly thirty percent of crashes resulted in injuries, and almost one in ten of the injuries were fatal. The data from the 2015 report indicates a nearly identical injury rate and an increase in the number of fatalities.
Possible Causes of Swift Transportation's Poor Safety Record
The data and trends provided in the two studies suggest that Swift Transportation needs to inspect and maintain its vehicles more frequently. Drivers are not always responsible for trucking accidents and may be unable to avoid a collision in the event of tire blowouts, brake failure, and other mechanical issues. Being able to prove that the employer is complicit in the influence of accidents through the failure to follow safety standards or provide equipment that is safe to its employees can allow victims to maximize their claims. Individuals can be forgiven for errors in judgment, but corporations that cut corners at the cost of safety need to be forced to clean up their act.
