A City With Rich History
Not many Midwest cities can boast the historical significance that Springfield, IL offers. Although much of the early history of the U.S. is limited to the eastern portion of the country, the city touts one of the most revered and historically vital presidents, Abraham Lincoln, among its own. Also, the state's capital city has a rich political history and was a hub during the Civil War.
The area was settled by trappers and traders around the first decade of the 1800s. It was known as Calhoun until residents renamed it in 1832 to Springfield. First, it became the county seat, and then in 1839, it was named the state capital.
There have been several events over the last two hundred years in this relatively small city of just over 115,000.
- President Lincoln. The sixteenth president of the United States lived in Springfield from 1837 until 1861 when he left to take his position as president. He gave his famous Lyceum address in the city along with his farewell speech before leaving for Washington.
- Civil War. The city was host to the first regiments to train and serve under Ulysses S. Grant and was a political and financial resource throughout the war.
- Springfield Race Riot. In 1908, a three-day race riot plagued the streets of the city. Six people were murdered. The rioting finally stopped only after thousands of militiamen took control of the city.
- President Obama. In 2007, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama (44th United States President) made history in the city when he announced his candidacy for president at the site of the Old State Capitol building.
