Onglyza Heart Failure Lawsuit
All too often, new drugs are rushed to market without proper evaluations and assessments of risks and the severity of potential side effects. Onglyza is the latest medication to catch the attention of the FDA after recent studies have exposed a possible link between its use and increased likelihood of heart failure and the development of pancreatic cancer. If additional studies performed by the FDA give credence current allegations, AstraZeneca, the maker of Onglyza may be held accountable to all those who have taken the medication and suffered from heart disease or developed cancers related to the medication.

What is Onglyza?
Insulin is responsible for moving glucose from the blood into the cells and type two diabetics often suffer from a combination of insulin resistance and inhibited insulin production. Onglyza is a medication prescribed for the treatment of type two diabetes and helps to lower blood sugar by prompting the release of insulin by the pancreas and limiting the production of glucose by the liver. By increasing insulin levels, more glucose reaches the cells which require it and forcing the liver to hold onto glucose reserves ensures that the body will use more of the glucose released into the blood stream following meals thereby sustaining blood glucose at lower levels.
The primary advantage to prescribing Onglyza is that, unlike other diabetes medications, it does not cause weight gain or retention. AstraZeneca received FDA approval to bring it to market in 2009 and while the drug has shown to improve blood glucose levels in patients, others argue that AstraZeneca has withheld important information regarding potential side effects and links to serious or life threatening conditions. It was in February of 2014 that a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine prompted the FDA to issue a safety alert and begin its own investigation into whether Onglyza is linked to side effects that had not previously been disclosed.
Health Concerns Related to Onglyza
Studies have shown that patients using Onglyza were 27% more likely to experience heart failure but no conclusive evidence directly linked the medication to heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular diseases. The FDA did, however, state that the increased incidence of heart problems experienced by patients taking the medication does not appear to be due to chance and that it would perform a deeper investigation. Additional concerns surfaced when it was discovered that Onglyza caused inflammation of the pancreas which could lead to the development of tumors or cancer. Regardless of whether tumors were malignant, their removal further diminished the ability of patients to produce insulin and increased the likelihood that they would be required to inject insulin regularly for the rest of their lives.
Product liability law allows those injured by the use of a product to hold the manufacturer liable for any injuries that have occurred when the product is used as instructed. If you were prescribed Onglyza for the treatment of diabetes and experienced severe side effects such as cardiovascular disease, heart failure, the development of tumors or pancreatic cancer, you may be entitled to compensation for the cost of medical care, pain and suffering and any additional financial losses you may be forced to incur in the present or the future.
