2017 Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers – Single Mother Scholarship Winners

Every year, the attorneys at Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers give back to the community through financial aid scholarships as support to single mothers attending college. Our law firm understands the challenges single parents face when attempting to continue their education while supporting their family.

We are pleased to announce the winners of the annual $1000 Single Mother Scholarship to two students currently attending or planning to attend college or graduate school. Our program is designed to assist single mothers who have overcome many of life’s challenges and demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Since the program’s inception, the firm has provided more than $30,000 in scholarships to women enrolled in college and law school.

2017 Scholarship Winners

Our law firm congratulates Toni Nails and Laura Coates as the 2017 Winners of our two $1000 Annual Single Mother Scholarships. Our attorneys selected Toni and Laura from the many talented single mother students who detailed their efforts to improve the lives of their families through good study habits, dedication to success, and determination. Their efforts made choosing a winner challenging. We thank all applicants for their participation.

Toni Nails

Toni NailsToni Nails is earning a law degree from Western New England University – School of Law, as a single mom, while raising her young son Greg who was born prematurely in April 2016. Despite dealing with her son’s medical complications and her emotional struggles, Toni chose to push forward through her difficulties instead of withdrawing from her challenges.

Toni is focused on a dual degree (Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) and Master of Social Work (MSW)). She currently works “in group homes with individuals who have dual diagnoses of intellectual disabilities [and] mental health disorders.” At the time of her application to the scholarship, Toni maintained a “3.64 GPA at the School of Social Work and a 3.18 GPA at WNEU – School of Law.”

Laura Coates

Laura Coates returned to school to obtain a law degree “with a focus on human rights” decades after graduating from high school when she found herself pregnant and alone after the baby’s father moved out of state “to avoid responsibility and child support payments.” Laura now attends Western New England Law School. She had already received a mechanical engineering bachelor’s degree in thermodynamics at UMass Amherst years before. It was through determination back then that she could finally move out of her parent’s home with her daughter when she could “afford family housing on campus.”

A second marriage created her second daughter. Sadly, that seven-year marriage failed too. Fortunately, Laura found similarity “between education and parenting” that produces a “hope for the future” to handle life’s challenges. Recently, Laura’s eldest daughter graduated Magnum Cum Laude from Westfield State University. Her younger daughter is considering her college opportunities.

To be considered for a scholarship, all applicants taking part in the Single Mother Scholarship program submitted a completed application form and a typed essay and current school transcripts.
