The county was named after Richard Henry Lee, a statesman, and senator during the Revolutionary War. Lee was a Continental Congress Member and representative in Congress for the State of Virginia. John Dixon, a community forefather, donated the land of the Lee County Courthouse. The present-day building was completed in 1901. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, gave a speech in Dixon on July 17, 1856.
