Pioneer farmers began settling the area in the eighteenth century by the Mississippi River. By 1810, coal was being mined in the area along the river, followed by salt extractions a few years later using slave labor just south of Murphysboro. The mine owner, Conrad Will, obtained a legal exemption to use slaves, which was illegal in the Northwest Territory.
