Interstate 95 (I-95) is one of the busiest freeways of the American Interstate Highway System running north and south across the U.S. Eastern Seaboard. Interstate 95 begins at the U.S. Canadian border at the Houlton-Woodstock Border Crossing between Maine and New Brunswick, Canada.

The freeway ends in Miami, Florida, after traveling through nearly every state along the Atlantic coast. The freeway is the principal route winding through large metropolitan areas, including Portland, Portsmouth, Boston, Providence, New Haven, Bridgeport, New York City, Newark, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Richmond, Fayetteville, Florence, Savannah, Jacksonville, and Miami.

Interstate 95 is one of the original routes of the Interstate Highway System initiated during the Eisenhower administration. Many freeway sections were pre-existing toll roads that served as the fastest route from Maine to Florida. The freeway is 1919 miles long, providing freeway access to over 110 million residents.

A Heavy Congested Freeway

For nearly six decades, I-95 has been a heavily traveled route for the nation's commercial transportation companies hauling materials, goods, and fuel along the East Coast.

The freeway is exceptionally congested, especially in metropolitan areas during rush hour. Also, the highway in the northern states is highly susceptible to adverse weather conditions during the snowy months of the year.

The freeway in the Southern states is highly susceptible to hurricanes and other adverse weather conditions during tornado season. Additionally, statistics maintained by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration revealed that nearly 5000 fatal truck accidents occurred in 2018, which is the highest number of reported truck crash deaths since 2006.

Truck Accidents on Interstate 95

While commercial vehicles transporting goods across America are vital to the U.S. economy, any mishap could be catastrophic to passenger vehicles sharing the roadway. In addition, the sheer size and weight of a fully loaded semi-tractor trailer pose unique dangers for other motorists, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

Semi-tractor-trailers, also known as 18-wheelers, semi-trucks, and commercial vehicles, are often in accidents due to overloading, unbalanced cargo, or weather conditions that cause jackknifing and rear-end collisions.

Additionally, tanker trucks are incredibly hazardous when toxic chemicals or flammable liquids spill when the tank disengages, breaches the load, or erupts during a catastrophic crash.

For decades, since the highway system began constructing portions of I-95, the freeway has been extremely congested, where millions of passenger vehicles, tanker trucks, and semi-trucks share northbound and eastbound lanes daily. Also, most accidents occur in heavily populated areas filled with congested roads, heavy vehicles, and adverse road hazards that contribute to a dangerous environment.

Below is just a tiny sampling of the fatal accidents on I-95 in 2020 and early 2021.

Interstate 95 Tractor-Trailer Accident Kills Woman in Alexandria, VA

Hanover County, Virginia, June 2021 – Virginia State Police reported the death of one person in a crash involving a tractor-trailer colliding with a pickup on southbound I-95. The initial investigation revealed that a pickup driven by a 54-year-old Alexandria woman struck the back of the tractor-trailer near mile marker 94.

The crash killed the pickup driver, and other victims were assessed for injuries. Emergency medical technicians transported one male victim riding as a passenger in the pickup to the local hospital. Law enforcement shut down the southbound lanes until crews could clear the scene.

Nash County Interstate 95 Fatal Crash Kills One

Rocky Mount, North Carolina, April 2021 – North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported a crash involving two semi tractor-trailers on the northbound freeway. The crash happened just before 3:00 AM. The Wednesday morning crash ripped open the trailer on one semi-tractor, spilling produce across all northbound lanes.

Law enforcement shut the road for hours, backing up traffic for miles.

Interstate 95 Fatal Accident in Newburyport

Newburyport, Massachusetts, June 2021 – Local law enforcement reported the death of a 48-year-old Saugus man who rear-ended a commercial van before crossing the I-95 median and slamming into a pickup traveling in the northbound lane.

Massachusetts State Police report that Emergency Medical Technicians arrived at the crash scene and transported the victim to the hospital, where he later died. The investigation revealed that speeding was a likely contributing factor to the collision. State police found his Hyundai Elantra in the dense woods of I-95 on the opposite side from where he was initially traveling.

Reports indicated that the crash occurred at about 3:00 PM in Newburyport, just before Exit 86, when the Elantra rear-ended a commercial Ford Van, causing the Ford to roll over on its side in the freeway median.

Fatal Collision in Jacksonville on I-95

Jacksonville, Florida – Florida Highway Patrol closed all lanes on I-95 in Jacksonville after a Saint Augustine woman's compact car was crushed between two semi tractor-trailer trucks in the late morning collision.

The decedent had been heading southbound on I-95 in the outside lane as traffic slowed down. Unfortunately, a 2014 International semi traveling behind the decedent’s car failed to slow in time and rear-ended her Toyota. The fully loaded tractor-trailer pushed her into a 2009 Freightliner semi traveling ahead, crumpling and buckling the cargo trailer.

The trucker who caused the collision suffered minor injuries, and the other trucker was not injured. Florida Highway Patrol reopened both southbound lanes of I-95 after being closed overnight and into the late morning hours.

Slick Roads Lead to Fatal Crash on I-95 Killing 5-Year-Old

Petersburg, Virginia, June 2021 – Virginia State Police reported four accidents occurring within hours and miles of each other along Interstates 85 and 95 due to inclement weather. Early reports indicate that a child died in the collision, and his mother was diagnosed with a broken neck.

The first collision occurred early Saturday morning. A follow-up crash around midnight killed a trucker swerving to avoid a fallen tree.

I-95 Crash Claimed the Life of a Shelton Woman

Bridgeport, Connecticut, July 2020 – Connecticut State Police reported that southbound interstate traffic had been stopped for miles following a fatal commercial vehicle collision on the southbound lanes of I-95. The accident claimed a Shelton woman's life when her car collided with a semi-tractor-trailer that ignited a fire just south of exit 19 in Fairfield.

Initial reports indicate that the 36-year-old Florida trucker collided with the decedent's Hyundai Veloster. Law enforcement opened all traffic lanes when the investigation was completed and crews cleared the accident scene.

Fatal Collision on I-95 in South Portland Claims Two Lives

South Portland, Maine, January 2020 – Maine State Police reported that the South Portland trucker involved in a collision killing a Falmouth couple had not been charged with their death. The wreck occurred on January 12 when a 68-year-old driver and his wife were struck from behind by a 38-year-old trucker from South Portland.

The trucker's vehicle rear-ended a 2014 Lexis RX 230, pushing it into the back of another tractor-trailer when the couple was slowing down due to heavy congestion. Initial reports indicate that "speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors" for causing the collision.

The police indicated that the trucker that caused the collision "failed to recognize traffic had slowed down." An hour earlier, police had stopped and arrested another man who had been driving erratically at the spot where the accident occurred.

State police said that "this event slowed and stopped traffic in both north and southbound lanes," which led to the congested traffic at the spot where the couple died.

Extremely impressed with this law firm. They took control of a bad motorcycle crash that left my uncle seriously injured. Without any guarantee of a financial recovery, they went out and hired accident investigators and engineers to help prove how the accident happened. I am grateful that they worked on a contingency fee basis as there was no way we could have paid for these services on our own. Ethan Armstrong
