Interstate 5 (I-5) is a heavily congested north-south freeway of the American Interstate Highway system traveling along the western seaboard of the United States from Canada to Mexico. The highway travels through Washington State, Oregon, and California through major metropolitan areas, including Seattle, Portland, Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

Interstate 5 is the only continuous freeway touching both the Canadian and Mexican borders. The freeway starts at the northern US/Canadian border terminus at British Columbia Highway 99 and ends at the southern US/Mexico terminus at Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.

Interstate 5 was a part of the original Interstate Highway System in 1956, incorporating numerous pre-existing roads, including US Route 99. The longest segment of the 1381 mile long freeway is in California at 796 miles, and the shortest segment in Washington is 276 miles.

A Heavily Congested Highway

Many long-haul truckers use I-5, hauling cargo, fuel, and liquids north and south, especially from the numerous ports along the route bringing goods in from Asia. As a result, the highway is often extremely crowded during rush hour traffic when fully loaded semi-tractor-trailers share the roadway with passenger cars, placing drivers at risk when crashes occur.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, about 5000 people die every year on American freeways in semi-truck accidents. Their study showed that even though semi-trucks represent 3% of all vehicles sharing the road, they cause 12% of all fatal crashes.

The sheer weight and size of fully-loaded semi-trucks can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, compared to a passenger car at about 3500 pounds. As a result, even a minor collision can cause catastrophic injuries or death when speed, distraction, or drunk driving is involved.

Below is a tiny sampling of some of the devastating truck accidents occurring on Interstate 5.

Fiery Crash involving Commercial Truck Kills Passenger Driver

Bakersfield, California, June 2021 – The Kern County Sheriff's Office confirmed the death of a 21-year-old female motorist in a passenger car who was killed after crashing into a semi-truck along I-5. A semi-tractor-trailer riding behind the semi-truck involved in the accident captured the horrific event on a dashcam.

The early morning incident occurred when the driver headed southbound on I-5 near Stockdale Highway before crossing the center median, hitting the semi-truck, and bursting into flames. Early investigations could not determine why the car drifted off the road or why the driver headed in the wrong direction into oncoming traffic.

Fatal Collision on I-5 Killed Two and Harmed Four

Bakersfield, California, June 2021 – The California Highway Patrol confirmed that two individuals were killed and four were severely injured in a collision occurring on I-5 near Highway 43. The late morning wreck involved a 2003 GMC traveling southbound on the freeway while the other vehicle was traveling northbound.

The tire tread on the GMC separated, leading to the motorist making an unsafe turn, causing a rollover multiple times.

During the rollover, the driver and passenger were ejected, suffering fatal injuries. After the passenger was ejected, they struck the northbound car.

There were two more occupants inside the GMC. One passenger suffered minor injuries, and the other had reported severe injuries. Emergency medical technicians transported both injured victims to Kern Medical for treatment. The driver and passenger in the second vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Semi-Truck Strikes and Kills Pedestrian on I-5

Woodburn, Oregon, June 2021 – The Oregon State Police confirmed a fatal collision occurred early Thursday morning along northbound I-5, killing a 63-year-old standing in the northbound lane. A preliminary report revealed that the fatal wreck occurred south of Woodburn, Oregon.

An Oregon State Police trooper reported that moments before the collision where the semi-truck struck and killed a pedestrian, dispatchers had received numerous calls from motorists about someone standing on the road.

Trucker Ejected and Dies in Collision on I-5

Stanislaus County, California, April 2021 – The California Highway Patrol confirmed a deadly collision involving three semi-trucks that occurred just after 1:00 AM on I-5 in the northbound lane near Howard Road.

The early Wednesday morning collision involved one semi-truck driver being ejected from the rig and pronounced dead at the scene. There were no reports of injuries involving the truckers in the other semis.

Suspected Drunk Driving Likely in Fatal Truck Collision on I-5

Sacramento, California, March 2021 – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) arrested a suspected drunk driver after hitting and killing a tow truck driver who had responded to a disabled car on the freeway. The police responded to the wreck at approximately 11:40 PM, closing all northbound lanes at Seamas Avenue.

The initial investigation revealed that the tow truck driver was working on the truck's right side along the freeway's right shoulder when the suspected drunk driver drove his minivan into the tow truck and victim.

The report indicates that the trucker was tossed into the interstate's northbound lanes. Emergency responders pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol stated that the allegedly drunk driver remained at the scene but refused to provide a statement. The driver was arrested after officers observed signs of intoxication. The drunk driver cited for causing the crash was not injured.

Suspected DUI Leads to Semi Tractor-Trailer Wreck in Elk Grove

Elk Grove, California, December 2020 – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed the arrest of a semi-truck driver suspected of driving under the influence leading to an early morning collision in Elk Grove, along I-5.

The local police report indicated that the wreck occurred at approximately 1:00 AM when the trucker lost control of his truck hauling hay and flipped the semi-truck onto the southbound side of I-5 near Elk Grove Boulevard.

The accident caused the cargo to spill onto the road, blocking the traffic for hours. The initial investigation revealed that the trucker was not hurt during the collision and was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence.

Wreck on I-5 Near Terwilliger Pins Passenger Car Underneath

Portland, Oregon July 2021 – The Portland Police Department confirmed that a semi-truck collision closed the northbound lanes of I-5 just north of the Terwilliger Boulevard Overpass. The semi-tractor trailer rolled onto its side, pinning a vehicle underneath.

Local police responded to the rollover collision at approximately 4:30 AM. While the collision pinned a vehicle with occupants, and it took hours to extricate the occupants and remove the vehicle, it was not a fatal collision.

Second Crash Injures First Responders at Accident Scene

Medford, Oregon July 2021 – A Oregon State Police responded to a single-car rollover on I-5 in the northbound lane with two people trapped inside, closing all lanes of traffic.

After first responders arrived, a passenger car, uninvolved in the initial wreck, struck the ambulance at approximately 11:00 PM, injuring a paramedic, Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief, and an injured victim from the initial wreck getting into the ambulance.

According to the Transportation Department, all injured victims, including those in both cars, are expected to survive. The Phoenix Police Department and the Oregon Department of Transportation helped shut down the freeway after the two major crashes, blocking traffic for hours.

Extremely impressed with this law firm. They took control of a bad motorcycle crash that left my uncle seriously injured. Without any guarantee of a financial recovery, they went out and hired accident investigators and engineers to help prove how the accident happened. I am grateful that they worked on a contingency fee basis as there was no way we could have paid for these services on our own. Ethan Armstrong
