Interstate 41 (I-41) is a major north-south Interstate freeway starting in the north at Green Bay, Wisconsin (I-43) and stopping at the Illinois/Wisconsin border, changing to the Tri-State Tollway (I-55)). The nearly 177-mile long highway runs near or through major Wisconsin cities, including Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha, before ending at the border.
Highway junctions along I-41 include interstates:
- 43 (Milwaukee)
- 94 (Milwaukee, WI, Russell, IL)
- 894 (Milwaukee)
The freeway exits into I-94, beginning the Tri-State Tollway. The freeway travels through numerous Wisconsin counties, including Brown, Outagamie, Winnebago, Fond du Lac, Dodge, Washington, Waukesha, Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha in Wisconsin, and Lake County, Illinois.
Negligence Causes Catastrophic Truck Accidents
The truck’s sheer size and weight hitting a passenger vehicle can be catastrophic. Many semi-tractor trailer accidents are the result of negligence when maneuvering, stopping or turning.
While collisions involving passenger vehicles and pickup trucks can be disastrous, filing a compensation claim is usually straightforward, dealing directly with the claims adjuster. Alternatively, multiple parties may be responsible for causing a victim’s injuries in a commercial tractor-trailer crash.
Common reasons for these accidents include:
- The trucker was distracted, intoxicated, or tired
- The loading crew improperly loaded cargo by filing the trailer too high, causing an imbalance or raised center of gravity
- The trucker drove too fast, especially during adverse weather conditions or on hazardous roads
- The trucker made an illegal lane change or sudden turn
- The maintenance crew failed to ensure that the steering, brakes, and tires were safe
- The truck manufacturer sold the vehicle with defective parts
All motorists sharing the roads expect every commercial truck driver to have years of experience behind the wheel and training to follow traffic rules. Unfortunately, many trucking companies hire poorly trained, inexperienced drivers.
Statistics reveal that the roads are filled with reckless truckers that lack experience in keeping freeways safe. In many cases, trucking companies are responsible for crashes by failing to ensure that every trucker is well-trained to handle their vehicle and obeying all laws, including “hours of service” regulations that require sufficient breaks throughout the workday.
An attorney working on behalf of the victim can ensure that the trucking company is held directly liable for failing to improperly load the cargo, schedule deliveries with sufficient time for the trucker to arrive safely, and maintain the truck.
I-41 Truck Accidents
According to statistics maintained by the NHTSA, hundreds of thousands of people are seriously injured, and thousands are killed annually in vehicle accidents. Many accidents involve large commercial vehicles, tractor-trailers, long-haul truckers, and box trucks.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reports that more than 4000 fatal truck accidents occurred in 2018. Many of those happened on Interstate 41 in Wisconsin.
The Illinois DOT released fatal truck accident data for 2018, noting 13,071 accidents resulted in 122 deaths and 2235 injuries. Recent commercial truck accidents reported in the news media online include:
Wisconsin Department of Transportation Camera Captures Driver Crashing Through Ramp
Milwaukee, Wis, February 2021 – Portions of the Milwaukee Zoo Interchange were closed after a pickup truck drove off an exit ramp bridge plunging 70 feet below onto Interstate 94. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s office said that the Saturday morning incident happened around 10:00 A.M.
Deputies revealed that the incident was video recorded by Wisconsin Department of Transportation camera equipment showing the red pickup truck crashing through the bridge ramp before toppling and falling to the freeway below. The video shows several cars passing by the crash scene.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation video imaging shows the pickup truck crashing through the bridge ramp, rolling backward, before landing on its wheels. Law enforcement says that the breathing, conscious driver alone inside the vehicle did not appear impaired.
Officials say the preliminary investigation reveals the pickup truck driver lost control before driving into a snowbank, through the barrier wall, and down to the freeway’s westbound distress lane.

After striking the initial car, the first vehicle continued to spin in traffic before crashing into a second vehicle driven by a woman from West Bend with a two-months-old baby inside.
Washington County Sheriff's office reported that Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) transported the driver responsible for crashing and two others to a local hospital where she died. Deputies kept the northbound and southbound lanes and westbound exit closed until all debris was removed from the road.
