Interstate 35 (I-35) is a busy freeway in the American Interstate Highway System running north and south from Minnesota to Texas. The 1568-mile Highway starts in Duluth, Minnesota, at Minnesota State Highway 61 and ends near the Mexican border in Laredo, Texas.

The freeway travels through six states: Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas and large metropolitan areas, including Des Moines, Kansas City, Wichita, Oklahoma City, Austin, and San Antonio.

The longest stretch of the freeway is in Texas, at 503.96 miles, and the shortest segment is in Missouri at 114.74 miles.

A Heavily Congested Freeway

The easy accessibility and central location of Interstate 35 make it an ideal route for the trucking industry moving cargo in nearly every direction across the United States. Unfortunately, heavy trucks must share the road with passenger cars, SUVs, buses, tanker trucks, and motorcycles under the most adverse weather conditions.

During the winter months, truck drivers encounter heavy snows and icy roads in northern states and intense desert heat and tornadoes when traveling through Oklahoma and Texas. Even in the best conditions, hazardous road conditions can create a dangerous environment for all motorists that share the roadway.

Federally Regulated Industry

The trucking industry is regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and other federal agencies. All truckers must follow regulations per highway authorities and regulators and face fines or have their license suspended when they fail to obey the law.

In many states, slower vehicles in commercial trucks cannot drive in the left lane when there are three or more lanes unless marked. Other restrictions ensure that truckers drive only in designated lanes, pass on the left, and obey all traffic laws.

Statistics show that many traffic accidents involving commercial trucks are caused by the driver's speed when making sudden changes, changing lanes, and turning.

Statistical data reveals nearly 5000 accident fatalities happen every year involving 18 wheelers on the nation's highways, including Interstate 35.

Below is a tiny sample of the severe accidents with injuries and fatalities occurring on Interstate 35 in 2020 in early 2021.

Jarrell, Texas, May 2021 – The Texas Department of Public Safety reported a serious crash involving two semi-trucks on Interstate 35 between Georgetown and Jarrell in the southbound lanes. The reports indicate that the early morning crash occurred at about 5:40 AM.

Initial reports indicate that the accident happened near Mile Markers 270, involving at least one semi-tractor trailer. As a result, the Williamson County Sheriff's office closed the southbound lanes, detouring traffic to the southbound exit out to Ronald Reagan Boulevard.

Lakeville, Minnesota, July 2021 – The Minnesota Department of Transportation captured video on their traffic cameras of a crash occurring on Interstate 35 near Lakeville, in the northbound lanes. Stormy Weather Leads to Truck Accident South of Dallas

Waxahachie, Texas, May 2021 – Slippery road surfaces during a storm possibly led to a catastrophic accident involving three semi-tractor-trailers that flipped over on Interstate 35.

Emergency medical technicians from Ellis County extricated a truck driver from his vehicle and transported him to a local hospital after his vehicle flipped over on I-35 near Waxahachie, Texas.

At least two semi-tractor-trailers landed in the field off the freeway's right shoulder, spilling cargo across the road. At least one of the other truck drivers was injured during the crash, but further details are unavailable.

The investigation into what occurred and cleanup crews required the road to remain closed for hours until the wreckage could be cleared.

Asphalt Truck Plows into Store off I-35

San Antonio, Texas, June 2021 – Emergency medical technicians transferred three people to the hospital after a Monday morning crash involving a semi-truck carrying asphalt plowed into a Circle K convenience store. The incident occurred on the northeast side when the semi-truck exited Interstate 35 from the southbound lanes at the O'Connor intersection.

The truck driver told investigators he attempted to stop, but his brakes fail, causing him to lose control of the vehicle before it rolled on its side and slid into the convenience store.

The asphalt truck driver suffered severe injuries to his arm. Two other people were transferred to the local hospital with minor injuries. The semi-truck driver hit one victim who was in the car at the time.

San Antonio Police Department authorities stated at a news conference that "thank God they didn't get killed."

Initial reports indicate that many people were inside the Circle K when the accident occurred but had some time to take cover before the truck made its impact. First responders removed the semi-tractor-trailer from the store, shutting down the area for hours.

Icy Roads Lead to Four Semi-Truck Crash on I-35

Waco, Texas, February 2021 – Local law enforcement reported four semi-trucks were involved in a crash on Interstate 35 near Hewitt in the southbound lanes. The Wednesday morning accident occurred on icy roads.

Emporia, Kansas, June 2021 – The Lyon County Sheriff's office arrested a truck driver on suspicion of driving under the influence after causing a crash on I-35 near Emporia. The 35-year-old truck driver reportedly caused the crash at about 2:37 AM on the west side of Emporia, on a southbound roundabout on Interstate 35.

The Sheriff's Department was called to the scene after receiving information about an overturned semi-tractor trailer. The investigation revealed that the allegedly intoxicated truck driver was driving south on Interstate 35 when he failed to negotiate the change in the road.

Investigators claim that he was traveling at too fast a rate of speed for the conditions and was impaired by alcohol which are believed to be contributing factors to the rollover crash.

Extremely impressed with this law firm. They took control of a bad motorcycle crash that left my uncle seriously injured. Without any guarantee of a financial recovery, they went out and hired accident investigators and engineers to help prove how the accident happened. I am grateful that they worked on a contingency fee basis as there was no way we could have paid for these services on our own. Ethan Armstrong
This lawyer really helped me get compensation for my motorcycle accident case. I know there is no way that I could have gotten anywhere near the amount that Mr. Rosenfeld was able to get to settle my case. Thank you. Daniel Kaim
