Interstate 15 (I-15) is a busy freeway in the American Interstate Highway System running north and south from the Canadian border to Southern California. The freeway begins at the Sweetgrass-Coutts Border Crossing at the US/Canadian border in Montana at the Alberta Highway 4.
The 1433-mile Highway travels through six states: Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and California. The freeway ends in San Diego, California, at the Interstate 8 Junction after traveling through large metropolitan areas including Great Falls, Helena, Butte, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Provo, St. George, Las Vegas, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
A Heavily Congested Interstate
Its North-South arteries make it a popular long-haul route for commerce throughout North America, where hundreds of thousands of passenger vehicles and large commercial trucks travel daily.
However, heavily congested traffic in large metropolitan areas and the long spans of empty highways make it dangerous for travelers when trucks hauling heavy cargo share the road with passenger cars.
Truckers using Interstate 15 to transport goods must deal with adverse weather conditions year-round. The trucks must accommodate freezing temperatures during the winter months in the northern states of Montana, Idaho, and Utah, where road surfaces can be filled with ice and snow.
During the summer months, the deserts of California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah can be especially brutal, leading to unexpected tire blowouts, engine overheating, and slick road surfaces, especially during the stormy monsoon season.
Below is a tiny sample of the accidents with severe injuries and fatalities occurring on Interstate 15 during the early months of 2021.
Fatal Crash on Interstate-15 Near Mesquite Involves Multiple Semi-Trucks
Mesquite, Arizona, April 2021 – The Arizona Highway Patrol and Nevada Highway Patrol reported the closure of southbound lanes and northbound Interstate 15 lanes near Mesquite at the southern Utah State line following a fatal crash.
The fatal crash involving multiple semi-trucks occurred at approximately 5:23 PM when a semi-tractor-trailer veered off Interstate 15 onto the shoulder in the northbound lane.
The first semi-truck on northbound Interstate 15 crashed into another semi-tractor trailer parked on the shoulder. After hitting the parked commercial vehicle, the first semi-crossed all northbound lanes on I-15 and entered the southbound traffic before hitting the third semi-truck traveling in the southbound lanes.
The force of the fatal crash caused the last semi-tractor-trailer to hit a passenger car also traveling in the southbound lanes. The last truck rolled over, spilling its cargo onto the freeway.
The first semi-truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical technicians. Both occupants inside the passenger vehicle were transported to a hospital in St. George, Arizona.
The trucker in the semi rollover suffered minor injuries and was released at the fatal crash scene. No other motorists or passengers involved in the accident were injured. However, the interstate was closed for several hours, causing traffic to back up.
Police Report Semi-Truck Rollover on Interstate 15 Near North Salt Lake
North Salt Lake, Utah, June 2021 - The Utah Department of Transportation traffic cameras captured video of a truck running off the roadway along I-215 at the south I-15 ramp over a highway barrier. The crash involving a rollover closed a ramp on Interstate-15 near North Salt Lake for hours.
The police indicated that no one was hurt at the crash scene, which was likely caused by a wet spot on the roadway, causing the truck driver to lose control of the vehicle. As a result, a portion of the interstate was closed for several hours, causing traffic to back up.
Semi-Truck Jumps the I-15 Median Narrowly Missing Vehicles
Mojave County, Arizona, May 2021 – Local authorities suspect that a blown tire caused a semi-tractor-trailer hauling 35,000 pounds of produce to jump the median into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing two minivans on Interstate 15 near Littlefield, Arizona. The crash caused the closure of the northbound lanes for over four hours.
Emergency personnel responded to a semi-truck crash shortly after 1:00 PM and found a semi-tractor-trailer traveling southbound loaded with produce rolled over on its side in Interstate 15 near Mile Marker 4 on the northbound lane. The truck driver was uninjured.
Among the drivers and passengers in the minivans, two small children were all involved in the crash. There were no reported injuries among the minivans' drivers and passengers on their way to visit Zion National Park.
However, one of the windows in a minivan was shattered entirely from rocks and debris thrown by the jumping semi, sending glass into the van's interior, including on a child's car seat. According to eyewitness accounts, the semi-tractor-trailer "went airborne for a second, jumped the berm, and then landed on the northbound lanes of I-15 and rolled over."
Multiple Semi-Trucks Leave One Person Critically Injured
Baker, California, May 2021 – San Bernardino County Firefighters confirmed that a crash involving two tractor-trailers traveling southbound occurred at approximately 5:19 AM on Interstate 15 near Mile Marker 143. Additionally, one firefighter reported that one of the semi-tractor-trailers involved in the crash was on fire when they arrived.
One truck driver who was critically injured in the crash involving multiple semi-trucks was airlifted to a local trauma center. It took firefighters until 6:27 AM to put the fire out. The interstate remained closed for several hours, causing traffic to back up.
Rear-End Accident Results in Truck Fatality on I-15
Bonsall, California, April 2021 – California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that a man was killed in a Thursday morning collision when he crashed the back of his passenger car into a semi-truck on I-15 near Bonsall.
The initial investigation report revealed that a Dodge Charger was wedged under a commercial vehicle trailer in the southbound lane on Interstate 15 north of an exit ramp leading to Old Highway 395. The crash happened at approximately 9:05 AM when a "high-speed 2021 Dodge Charger traveling southbound, passing everybody else on the freeway" was involved in a crash.
An officer at the scene said the driver "went to the number 4 lane and collided with the back of the big rig, and went under the back of the big rig."
The investigation report showed that the 42-year-old Baldwin Park Dodge Charger driver died at the crash scene. The 71-year-old commercial truck driver did not suffer injuries.
Semi-Truck Likely Strikes and Killed Pedestrian on Interstate 15
North County, California, May 2021 – CHP investigators believe that a semi-truck struck and killed a pedestrian Friday morning on Interstate 15 near Fallbrook at about 10:45 AM. A California Highway Patrol spokesman said that the decedent "may have been in traffic lanes when he was possibly struck by a white semi-truck."
Cal Fire San Diego crews and CHP officers attempted to save the man's life after finding him on the freeway's right shoulder. However, the spokesman stated that the victim died at the scene.
CHP asked for information from the public of any white semi-truck that might show damage to its right side. As a result, the interstate was closed for several hours, causing traffic to back up.
