Interstate 10 (I-10) is the American interstate highway system's fourth-largest freeway, along the southernmost states from California to Florida. Interstate 10 starts in Santa Monica, California, traveling east and west, ending in Jacksonville, Florida, across 2460 miles.
As one of the nation's largest highways, I-10 travels through major American cities, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Tucson, Las Cruces, El Paso, San Antonio, Houston, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Gulfport, Mobile, Tallahassee, and Jacksonville.
A Popular but Dangerous Freeway
As a major freeway running from the West Coast to the East Coast, the well-traveled route is ideal for large commercial truck transportation moving goods, materials, and fuel across the nation.
Statistics show that between 2009 and 2019, the number of large truck accidents rose 31%. Many of those accidents occurred on Interstate 10 across the southern American states.
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration statistics from 2018 revealed that there were 4951 fatalities in truck accidents involving large commercial vehicles, the highest number since 2006 with 5027 highway semi-truck deaths.
Truck Accidents on Interstate 10
Large commercial trucks colliding with smaller passenger vehicles usually result in catastrophic truck accidents with severe injury and death. Data from the Information Insurance Institute reveals that 96% of all vehicle occupants in crashes involving commercial trucks and passenger vehicles die.
Many of these crashes involve extensive property damage, years of permanent injury, and skyrocketing medical bills to heal, when possible. As a result, many survivors of a truck crash involving injuries or death file civil lawsuits seeking compensation to recover their damages.
Since it was first constructed in the 1970s, I-10 has been a busy interstate in the highway system, where millions of cars, trucks, and tankers share westbound and eastbound lanes daily. As a result, the roads, especially near metropolitan areas, are often filled with numerous heavy vehicles, clogged traffic, and adverse road hazards contributing to a dangerous environment.
Below is just a tiny sampling of the fatal accidents that occurred on Interstate-10 around June 2021.
