Interstate 80 (I-80) is the second-longest United States transcontinental highway traversing east to west. The freeway begins in San Francisco, California, from the US 101 until it merges with the New Jersey Turnpike in Teaneck, NJ, just miles away from Manhattan, New York.
In 1956, the U.S. Department of Transportation designated the freeway as one of the original Interstate Highway System routes. The last I-80 segment was completed in 1986.
The freeway travels through or by major cities, including Reno, Nevada, Salt Lake City, Utah, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Omaha, Nebraska, Des Moines, Iowa, Peoria and Joliet, Illinois, South Bend, Indiana, Toledo, Ohio, and State College, Pennsylvania.
Semi-tractor-trailers, 18-wheelers, long-haul truckers, and large commercial vehicles travel millions of miles every year from both coasts near the Chicago metropolitan area.
These truckers drive in California's cool and wet climate through Nevada and Utah's hot deserts into the wintry weather of the upper Midwest into New Jersey.

The accident was caused by an illegal lane change and failure to give the right of way, leading to nearly day-long traffic back up. The Illinois State police shut all westbound lanes down until the evening. Due to the horrific aftermath, all traffic was diverted to the Briggs Street exit ramp.
