Homewood is a village located in the Chicago Metropolitan Area. As of the 2010 Census, there were 19,323 people living in Homewood. The first confirmed settlers came to the area in 1834, and more settlers arriving from New England soon followed. Many of the first families who came to Homewood, then known as Hartford, were Dutch or German immigrants. The first railway station arrived in 1853 as part of the Illinois Central Railroad. The town grew quickly and several unique country clubs were established in order to provide entertainment for the local leisure class. Nearby factories provided jobs for many of Homewood’s workers, and the town enjoyed a special status due to its railroad depots. The 1929 stock market crash changed the area overnight, and many people lost their jobs and homes. However, Homewood recovered during World War II and grew exponentially after 1945.
Today, Homewood is a thriving village that attracts many people who wish to live and work there. The village celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1993, and it continues to grow today. Several retail businesses provide jobs to local residents, as do the many schools in the area. Occupational therapists are also in high demand in Homewood.
Many other people live in Homewood because they enjoy its proximity to the city of Chicago, which is just 22 miles north. Homewood is linked to the Windy City thanks to Amtrak’s City of New Orleans, Salukiand Illini train lines. Work commuters can travel between Homewood and downtown Chicago via the Metric Electric train line, which stops at Millenium Park.
