Because the core ingredients of talcum powder have been affirmatively linked to asbestos and cancer, many people have expressed concern that women who use it might contract ovarian cancer if it were to travel into the ovaries.
The Talcum Powder And Ovarian Cancer Link
More than other side effects, ovarian cancer has come to the fore in the controversy surrounding talcum powder. Specifically, many women wonder if using talcum powder or products with talcum powder can create or exacerbate the presence of cancer in their ovaries. Some explanation of the relationship between talcum powder and ovarian cancer is needed to understand this concern and to inform yourself about the possibility of it in your life.
Why Ovarian Cancer Specifically?
First of all, ovarian cancer is a significant and serious disease. Only one in one hundred women experience it in their lifetime. However, using talcum powder products might heighten that risk to twenty-five or even thirty percent. The specific reason why ovarian cancer is a threat with talcum powder though is mostly due to mechanics. Women use it in and around their groin, genitals, and other sensitive areas. What can happen then is that those talcum powder particles slip through the vagina, pass the fallopian tubes, and enter the ovaries. While in the ovaries, those powder particles can spur the growth of malignant cell development. Unfortunately, this can happen quite quickly and in no time at all a tumor can appear. With that complication, there is also the risk that it metastasizes and spreads throughout the body in which case it becomes incredibly difficult to overcome this disease. This is why ovarian cancer is referred to as the “silent killer.” It is also why screening and prevention are so important.
Studies Linking Talcum Powder And Ovarian Cancer
Talcum powder has been associated with a heightened risk of ovarian cancer in come case-control studies; yet, some remain skeptical of this linkage because of a lack of scientific and biological evidence and the possibility of selective or recall bias in these studies. To date, there have been almost two dozen studies suggesting a relationship between the two over the last thirty years. One study, done by Anticancer Research, reports that talcum powder might increase the risk of ovarian cancer by one-third. Another study on the subject, produced by Cancer Prevention Research, is less grim but still suggests an increased chance of ovarian cancer by a quarter.
The Fda’s View On Talcum Powder And Ovarian Cancer
The Food and Drug Administration has not come out and endorsed the proposition that talcum powder usage increases the chances of ovarian cancer, despite evidence to the contrary from other sources. It contracted a private company to conduct research in order to determine if common talcum powder products contained asbestos, a known carcinogen. The report concluded that there was none and the FDA used those findings to conclude that talcum powder presents no risk of ovarian cancer. The FDA released this conclusion despite the results of other studies that showed that talcum powder presents the risk of ovarian cancer separate and apart from any combination with asbestos. Public and private studies continue to determine the exact relationship between talcum powder and ovarian cancer.
