A properly trained dog is a joy to all who encounter him or her. Nobody likes to think about it, but man’s best friend also has a dark side. Every year, our beloved companion animals send one million people to the hospital for treatment related to a dog bite. According to data gathered by the insurance industry, the average cost per dog bite claim is $28,000. Dog bites account for one billion dollars in claims. The most common sites for canine bite injuries are the face, lips, nose, hands and arms.

The Alarming Facts About Dog Bites
  • Every year, nearly five million dog bites occur in the United States.
  • Nearly one-quarter of dog bites are from dogs who are chained up.
  • Almost three-quarters of all bites occur in the extremities (hands, feet, arms, legs).
  • Approximately one-quarter of all human deaths involve an unrestrained dog off the owner’s own property.
  • Nine out of ten fatal dog bites involve male dogs, of which 94 percent had not been neutered.
  • 238 dog bite-related injuries in the United States have been caused by 25 different breeds.

Eight breeds of dog are most likely to attack and cause injury. These are the Pit Bull Terrior, Rottweiler, Huskey, Bulmastiff, German Shephard, Akita, Chow and Doberman.

How Can We Prevent Dog Bites

There are many things that can be done to prevent yourself from being the target of an attack by a dog and being bitten. Most of them are common sense. Don’t run past a dog. Avoid making eye contact (we do this to avoid fights with humans, too!). If you are threatened by a dog, do not scream.

How do you tell if you are being threatened by a dog? Signals like growling or glaring at you are good indicators. It may also charge toward you or walk in your direction at a more reserved pace but in an unsettling way. If this happens, try to remain motionless as long as you feel safe to do so. If you believe the dog is preparing to attack you, place an obstacle between the animal and yourself, such as a backpack or a bicycle.

Approaching a strange dog, especially one that is making you feel uncomfortable, is asking for trouble. If you feel like you must pet a dog, let them approach you for a good sniff and a good look at you.

If, despite following all of the good advice given above, you are unable to prevent a dog bite, you will need to contact a dog bite injury lawyer, one who understands the importance of conducting a thorough investigation. Remember, one of the most common sites of a dog bite are the hands. What if you were suddenly unable to work or look after your family because a dog has literally bitten the hand that fed it?

Why not take a few moments right now to investigate the dog bite lawyers in your area, while you are safe and calm. The last thing you will feel like doing when faced with the shock, pain and emotional impact of a dog bite will be Googling the right attorney.

Extremely impressed with this law firm. They took control of a bad motorcycle crash that left my uncle seriously injured. Without any guarantee of a financial recovery, they went out and hired accident investigators and engineers to help prove how the accident happened. I am grateful that they worked on a contingency fee basis as there was no way we could have paid for these services on our own. Ethan Armstrong, Google User
