Historical Sites

The first permanent settlement in the area happened at what would become Hutton Township near the Embarras River in 1824. Years later, a settler built the first cabin on the river’s east bank, where the Water Plant Dam is located now. Only six years later, in 1830, the state legislature would establish offices of a county government and create Coles County.

By 1840, the population of the county had grown to more than 9,600 individuals. Three decades later, in 1870, the population had grown to more than 25,000 residents, due to the establishment of the railway system through the county that occurred less than two decades earlier.

Today, most Coles County businesses employ local workers in the agricultural industry and transportation, including jobs at the airport.
