If one nursing home’s nurse failed to administer a medication as prescribed by a resident’s doctor, the end result can be catastrophic. Unfortunately, drug mistakes are extremely easy to make. In fact, the Prospect Heights elder abuse attorneys at Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers LLC have represented many nursing home residents who have suffered life-threatening reactions due to a missed medication dose, the wrong drug or too high a dosage.
Medication errors can occur in a variety of manners including a physician prescribing the wrong drug or the wrong dosage. Other times, the pharmacy or physician forgets to ask about the resident’s allergies or the nurse administers the drug in the wrong manner.
Many medications have a negative interaction with other drugs the resident is already taking. Other times, the drug interacts in a negative way with the resident’s diet or the drug was mislabeled in the nursing home pharmacy before it was given to the resident. The catastrophic effect of a prescription medication mistake can have a minimal effect on the resident or lead to their death depending on the type of error.
