If you travel west from Chicago on I-88, you will pass through the northern outskirts of Aurora, IL, known as the “City of Lights”. Nestled in the Fox Valley near the Fox River, this town has grown from a small family settlement in 1834 to a thriving community of almost 200,000. As the population of Aurora has grown, so have the cities geographical boundaries. Aurora city limits now comprise areas of Kane County, DuPage County, Will County as well as Kendall County.
City Of Lights: The Nations First City To Use Electric Lights For City Streets
Aurora was established with a post office as a settlement in 1837, three years after the founder Joseph McCarty moved to the valley and sent word to his family in New York to come west. Aurora means the goddess of the dawn and was the first city in the U.S. to use electricity for public lighting, giving Aurora it’s new name, City of Lights.
Aurora Today: A Fast Growing Midwestern City
While Aurora was a manufacturing city in its first 100 or more years, as the 20th century came to a close, it has become more diverse in its economic and cultural opportunities. Although manufacturing and technology are still present, there has been a growth in tourism and entertainment as well.
The city is broke into three general areas, the west side, the east side and the area known as Fox Valley. The west side is the area west of the Fox River, and the east side refers of course to the east side of the river. The Fox Valley area is actually farther east and is more named for the mall that resides there then the valley itself.
Entertainment and cultural activities have grown in the last few decades. The downtown area on the river has the Hollywood Casino, which is one of the larger employers in the city. There are also many architectural landmarks, with structures designed by people such as Frank Lloyd Wright and several others. The city has its own zoo, museums and theaters to entertain locals and tourists alike.
The city supports six different school districts within the city limits, as well as a college and the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. There are private schools and colleges as well.
The City Hall in Aurora has a website that gives both residents and visitors information on local events, utilities and city department and service information. The website is at www.aurora-il.org.
