  1. Requesting a Crash Report

To obtain a copy of a crash report, you can request one in person at the address above for $5. You may also request traffic accident reports online at https://policereports.lexisnexis.com/. If you have problems with the website, call 1-866-215-2771 for assistance.

At the time of the crash, the responding officer who took the report should give all drivers involved a two-sided card with an online address; information about the crash, including the date, report number, other drivers involved, and the police agency; and instructions on how to obtain the driver information exchange at the web address listed above. The Driver Information Exchange Form is free of charge.

    Driver Information Exchange Instructions:

    • Select the “search” button.
    • Fill in the crash data for the report you need.
    • Create an ID or log in with your existing ID, if you have one.
    • If a report is available, the site will display a Free Drivers Exchange link.
    • Select “add to cart” for the link.
    • On the purchase page, enter the requested information, including your date of birth. To get a free exchange report, you must use an involved driver’s birth date.
    • Select “View Your Cart,” review the order, and select the “Checkout” button.
    • Provide a reference number and billing information if needed and select “Continue.”
    • Select the “Purchase and Download Report” button and the Drivers Exchange Report will open as a PDF file in a new window.
    • Save or print your report.
  2. Requesting Other Police Reports
  3. To obtain a report other than a crash report in Aurora, including incident police reports, warrants, and citations, you will need to make a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. The State of Illinois policy is, “that all persons are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government.” 5 ILCS §140/1. As a result, the Illinois FOIA law allows everyone to have access to Illinois public records to promote accountability and transparency at all levels of government.

You can make a FOIA request for an Aurora police report or record by mail, fax, or through the city’s online portal. For requests by mail or fax, you will need to download and complete the form and send it to:

    FOIA Officer
    3770 McCoy Drive
    Aurora, IL 60504
    Fax: 630-256-3299

Both the online and paper forms request your personal contact information and a description of the record you would like. This includes the title or type of report, a date range, and any specific information you can provide. The city may charge you for the information requested but will provide an estimate of costs before doing so.

★★★★★
Extremely impressed with this law firm. They took control of a bad motorcycle crash that left my uncle seriously injured. Without any guarantee of a financial recovery, they went out and hired accident investigators and engineers to help prove how the accident happened. I am grateful that they worked on a contingency fee basis as there was no way we could have paid for these services on our own. Ethan Armstrong
★★★★★
This lawyer really helped me get compensation for my motorcycle accident case. I know there is no way that I could have gotten anywhere near the amount that Mr. Rosenfeld was able to get to settle my case. Thank you. Daniel Kaim

Through every step of the case, Jonathan kept my family informed of the progression of the case. Although our case eventually settled at a mediation, I really was impressed at how well prepared Jonathan was to take the case to trial. Lisa
