Abbott Laboratories issued some serious warnings for one of its popular drugs Humira (also known as adalimumab).  Humira acts by blocking TNF (tumor necrosis factor – involved in inflammatory and immune responses) which can cause inflammation and lead to immune-system disease.

Humira is used to treat conditions such as Crohn’s Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Plaque Psoriasis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.  Other TNF blockers include Remicade (infliximab), Enbrel (etanercept), Cimzia (certolizumab pegol), and Simponi (golimumab).

Warnings on Humira packaging

The warnings list serious infections and malignancy (cancer) which could result in hospitalization or death.  If you take Humira and are older than 65, have co-morbid conditions, and/or take immunosuppresants (corticosteroids or methotrexate), you may be at greater risk of infection.  TNF blockers can reduce your immune system’s ability to fight infections, which can place you at increased risk for opportunistic infections.

Some people who were taking Humira developed serious infections including:

  • Active TB (tuberculosis)
  • Invasive fungal infections (including histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis, candidiasis, aspergillosis, blastomycosis, and pneumocytosis)
  • Bacterial and viral infections (including Legionella and Listeria)

Increased risk of cancer

Humira also increases the chances for both children and adults of developing cancer.  Children, teenagers, and young adults have developed unusual cancers.  Whereas, other people have developed hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, which is a rare, aggressive, and often fatal type of T-cell lymphoma.  Lastly, Humira increases your chance of developing both basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer, which are very serious if not detected early on.

Unintended side effects

Still, there are other serious side effects associated with Humira including:

  • Heart failure
  • Nervous system problems
  • Blood problems
  • Liver problems
  • Hepatitis B infection (in people who carry the virus)
  • Allergic reactions
  • Immune reactions (including lupus-like syndrome)
  • Psoriasis (new or worsening)

Such serious side effects require a serious discussion with your doctor about the benefits and risks of Humira.  If you do decide to take Humira, you should be aware of the risks, especially so you can recognize early symptoms of any of the complications listed above.  If you take Humira, you should be monitored for infection both during treatment and after treatment.
